Chapter 20

The beef stew calmed my nerves, and I decided that for today I would go and explore the house instead of reading more even though I was itching to. I started walking toward the gardens when I bumped into Andy.

“Anne, could I see you for a minute. I want to go over the guest list.”

“Of course, but I’m not sure I will recognize anyone on the list.” We went to his office, and I saw a tome sitting on his desk.

“I would like you to take this list and study it.” He walked around his desk.

“Study it?” I looked at the book, suddenly petrified. I didn’t even study travel books in detail.

“I’d like you to memorize as many of the names as you can and let me know if you’d like to add anyone else to the list. Thankfully, the invitations will be going out late this year so there will probably not be as many people who come, but it’s best to be ready,” Andy said as he handed me a ten-page, twelve-point-font list of hundreds of names, where they were from, what companies they ran, and what relations they were to Sir Anthony.

“This is daunting, but I can do it,” I barely breathed out. “I thought you wanted me to go over that big book on your desk,” I laughed.

I glanced through the hundreds of names, dazzled by the Lords and Ladies, but also by all the names of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and nephews, and grand-grand nieces and nephews. Would the whole family really be coming to the gala? I suddenly started wondering if this was such a good idea. It seemed there were people from all over the world. I looked up at Andy and must have had a petrified look on my face. I surely felt like I had frozen and couldn’t move.

“Do not worry. No one expects you to remember every single person on this list. I just want you to remember as many as you can. It might make you feel more at ease to know a little about those who are invited and what they do.”

“Yes, I agree. There’s . . . just . . . so . . . many . . .”

“The gala will not be for another month so you have time. Let me know who you want to add today. I’ll have Ben go into town tomorrow to get the invitations ordered and sent out. We’ll rush them so they go out by this weekend. Also, when you can tomorrow, sit down with Cook to go over the menu. She has done it for so long she has
